The purpose of this document is not only to observe these hands, but to deeply contemplate the profound journeys that shaped them. Jazz, as we know it, was born in New Orleans in the late 19th century, and it is deeply rooted in the experiences and heritage of its ancestrally African creators.

The story of Seneca Candle is the story of Seneca Village – a predominantly Black community, c. 1820s to 1850s, positioned where the area between 82nd and 89th streets is today, on the West side of Central Park. It is an allegory of what happens when amnesia enacts itself, forcefully, in the public realm.

The elements we have come to associate with Modern architecture—the open plan (Le Corbusier’s “plan libre”), large windows, white walls—were meant to aid in creating flexible spaces that could be used in a variety of ways. To be clear, I have no quarrel with flexible spaces. However, I have realized in my professional practice that these spaces often end up as basic, generic, unidentifiable non-places where almost anything could happen, yet almost nothing significant ever does.

Ob viam, the Latin etymological root of the word “obvious”, has an interesting connotation to it; ob viam translates to “in the way”, that which is before you (in front of you). The evidence of a supporting foundation to a building, again, is obvious. However, we do not see the foundation itself. The structure itself is in this interesting paradigm of being indivisible to the building but invisible to the building’s occupants. In the way and out of sight at once.

Via investigation of the site, this installation endeavours to make the past tangible. The project subtly grants insight into a historical and spatial context that’s otherwise relatively invisible, in the heart of a city profusely rich with stories of its built environment – if only we were to surface and see them.

What was unknowingly committed to memory, and revealed itself later as the Post Lamp, were observations of various ornamental lampposts found in the historic public spaces of New York City.
